While Australia was not hit as hard as the US by the mass resignation of employees, we’ve still had to deal with massive changes to our businesses, which includes a shortage of skilled staff that pre-dated the pandemic. So, what should a savvy employer do to find new, good employees?

The first thing to consider is how you are holding on to your existing great team members. It costs around $4000 to hire a new employee, but that doesn’t consider the value of potential business you couldn’t engage in. Would that $4000 (or even a portion of it) be better spent on making your workplace more attractive to your existing employees? After all, they are likely being headhunted by other businesses like yours who are experiencing the same problems as you.

If you’re already making your existing employees as comfortable as possible, lets have a look at some ideas on how to make your offering more attractive to potential new employees.

Embrace Flexibility

Business managers need to figure out exactly what ‘flexibility’ means in the scope of their business. There are multiple factors to flexibility:

Best practice would suggest that you consider each of these options with a fully open mind – not trying to push your existing work practices into them, but looking at your business model in a whole new way – can you change what you currently do to make it fit with flexible arrangements?

You may find that you open up a whole new group of potential employees who are looking for a flexible solution.

Keeping Workers Safe

Adjusted safety protocols have been the norm for employers this year, with mask mandates and rolling lockdowns. In order to attract employees, an employer should be able to show that they have consulted with their employees and have made their workspaces as safe as possible based on those discussions.

Worker Burnout and Stress

Many workers have found it difficult to separate work and home life since they have been working from home. Business managers need to address the issues of isolation, stress and work-life balance in a proactive way with their employees, and highlight these actions when you are hiring.

New employees will be looking for employers who care for their health and wellbeing. If you can show potential recruits that you have taken the initiative to care for your existing staff, that will go a long way toward them accepting a position with your company.
